I developed my Spanish in Chile where I studied abroad for an entire year. My linguistic studies continued in China where I learned Mandarin and taught English for 2 years.
Spanish first entered my life when my sixth grade teacher asked if anyone wanted to go to Mexico. I still can\\'t explain why I wanted to - something about a thirst for knowledge I guess. I did go, and it changed my whole worldview. Here were people living their lives, drinking orange juice for breakfast but eating toast that came pre-toasted - Bimbo Pan Tostado. If only I could have understood what they were saying.
This same scenario repeated itself 6 years later in Peru. I had taken 3 years of Spanish by that point, and I could indeed communicate, but certainly not fully. I knew then and there that I would not stop until I had finished learning the language, all of it.
My college classes were not going to cut it. Study abroad was the only clear path to mastery. So I went to Santiago, Chile, through IFSA, a structured study abroad program, and the following semester enrolled directly in UC, taking classes with Chilean students. That, along with all the novels I read and my girlfriend, really solidified my Spanish. It was not hard anymore, nor even fun; it was normal.
I did find a new source for that linguistic pleasure: relating cultures and languages to each other. Understanding and experimenting with how different languages and grammars attack the same problem, attempt to express the same idea, in all its messy glory. Translation is the art of putting that knowledge and experience into practice.
If you want a (good enough) job, look elsewhere. The best job, the right job, or the whole job, now those I can handle. I translate everything you say, how you say it, and even why you say it.

Unlike many interpreters, I am completely bilingual. I did not know the difference between English and Spanish until I was about 5; I just knew that if I wanted to watch TV I had to ask my mother in with one set of words and everyone else in a different manner. I was able to formally develop both languages by attending high school in Buenos Aires and college at UCSD, where I currently study bioengineering. I have worked as a translator since January of 2013. The majority of my translations have been educational materials, including IEPs and special education evaluation reports. My translations have also included affidavits of domestic abuse victims, a cookbook for homeless individuals in shelters, and an iPad application about gastrointestinal stromal tumors. In addition, I worked for a year as a community interpreter with a focus on school settings, for such purposes as IEP meetings and student cognitive evaluations. I have experience with language editing as well, having assisted scholar Mary Berg in editing a recent edition of the nineteenth-century novel Aves sin nido.
Regarding my language work in other areas, from 2011 to 2015 I tutored Spanish to students of various ages and levels. I worked previously as a bilingual paraprofessional at Ellis Elementary School, helping to explain academic concepts in Spanish to my native-speaking third grade students.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. As the culmination of my collegiate experience, I wrote a 75-page senior thesis in Spanish about the fatalistic gender representations in Vargas Llosa’s Los cachorros and La ciudad y los perros. I completed a community interpreting certificate program in June 2014 and a medical interpreting certificate program in February 2015 with Language Connections. I received a perfect score on both final exams. As a result of my performance in the latter program, I was chosen for a 40-hour medical interpreting internship at Brigham and Women's Hospital, which I completed in July 2015.
Finally, I have extensive experience traveling in the Spanish-speaking world. During my junior year of college, I lived in Lima, Peru for a year. There, I studied at a local university and volunteered with Centro de Promoción y Defensa de los Derechos Sexuales y Reproductivos, a nonprofit working to protect sexual and reproductive rights and to advocate for the Peruvian LGBT community. I returned to Peru in 2014 and, more recently, in July 2016. In 2012 I spent a month backpacking on my own through Panama and Costa Rica, and I have visited Chile, Ecuador, and Spain as well.
