Essentially, I see myself as someone who is continually learning and this is from where I draw my strength as a linguist. I was born in a French and Haitian Creole speaking country. While growing up and at school, I learned French; at home however, my family had spoken both French and Creole. Later, at the age of nine, I began to learn the English language. Most often, I tend to be either a self-taught learner; for example, I learned to read and write a language by reading and studying on my own, since there had not been any school nearby offering it. Other times, I gain knowledge from instructors. Still yet, other times, I will draw material from my peers or just the world around me. I have always believed that my major strength had been in working at improving my communicative skills, whether it is the written word or the spoken word. As a linguist, I believe that this holds true for most of the languages I had studied. About five years ago, I earned a certificate in professional French translation, and I have been working to combine this background with a previous major, that of management studies. I have delved into the commercial world, the arena of healthcare, and medical terminology. Furthermore, having had the opportunity to acquire over the phone interpreting skills from professional interpreters on the job, I can comment that the exposure has also helped develop my oral skills within these fields. Presently, in order to fine-tune my writing skills for the professional world, I am now including specialized editing skills to my continuing education and professional development roster. Although my bachelor's degree is in French and my master's degree is in landscape architecture, English is my best skill. The only credentials I can offer in this area, besides a sample of my writing, are my test scores on the verbal portion of the GRE, which were in the 99th percentile (top 1%). My translations benefit greatly from this facility with English.
I have translated texts from French into English and have taken two university courses in translating French, which, surprisingly, have been generally applicable to other languages.
My Dutch is now much better than my French. I lived for 13 years in the Netherlands with my Dutch husband. I took two intensive courses there in Dutch as a second language and did well in both (a \\"9,\\" which is equivalent to an \\"A\\" in the American system). I continued to develop my knowledge of Dutch, and a few years ago I began translating texts from Dutch into English. One of my first paid jobs was for an architecture office. I was well suited for this job, because of my M.L.A. (Master of Landscape Architecture). Last year I passed the NT2 II exam, a challenging test of Dutch as a foreign language.
For the past few years, most of the texts I\\'ve translated have been academic, often scientific texts from the Delft University of Technology. My husband is a nuclear physicist, and I rely on him and others in my network to verify the correct translation of scientific terms. But I have a large vocabulary of my own and am good at researching terminology online.

Translation formed an integral part of my undergraduate degree in German and French at the university, for which I gained first class honours (the highest mark for undergraduate degrees under the UK grading system).
In 2010, I obtained a Graduate Diploma in Law. This is an intensive one-year course for non-law graduates, which is recognized by law firms and the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority (the professional body in England and Wales) as being equivalent to a law degree.
In 2013, I gained an MA in German to English Legal Translation. I took and passed the following modules: legal language and terminology, translation of litigation documents, contract translation, translation of commercial law documents, translation of property lease agreements, translation of EU legislative texts, financial translation and setting up as a professional translator. My dissertation was a translation of a German court ruling, together with a reflective commentary about the translation challenges involved.
