El español entró en mi vida por primera vez cuando mi maestro de sexto grado preguntó si alguien quería ir a México. Todavía no puedo explicar por qué quise ir: algo sobre una sed de conocimiento, supongo. Fui, y cambió toda mi visión del mundo. Había personas viviendo sus vidas, tomando jugo de naranja en el desayuno pero comiendo pan que venía pre-tostado: Bimbo Pan Tostado. Si tan solo hubiera podido entender lo que decían. Este mismo escenario se repitió 6 años después en Perú. Había tomado 3 años de español para entonces, y efectivamente podía comunicarme, pero ciertamente no del todo. Supe en ese momento que no me detendría hasta haber terminado de aprender el idioma, todo él. Mis clases universitarias no iban a ser suficientes. Estudiar en el extranjero era el único camino claro hacia el dominio del idioma. Así que fui a Santiago de Chile, a través de IFSA, un programa estructurado de estudios en el extranjero, y el semestre siguiente me inscribí directamente en la UC, tomando clases con estudiantes chilenos. Eso, junto con todas las novelas que leí y mi novia, realmente consolidó mi español. Ya no era difícil, ni siquiera divertido; era normal. Encontré una nueva fuente para ese placer lingüístico: relacionar culturas e idiomas entre sí. Comprender y experimentar cómo diferentes idiomas y gramáticas abordan el mismo problema, intentan expresar la misma idea, en toda su compleja gloria. La traducción es el arte de poner ese conocimiento y experiencia en práctica. Si quiere un trabajo (lo suficientemente bueno), busque en otro lado. El mejor trabajo, el trabajo correcto, o el trabajo completo, esos sí los puedo manejar. Traduzco todo lo que usted dice, cómo lo dice, e incluso por qué lo dice. ¿Por qué conformarse con menos?
